Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Wilkes, John Jay

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Following a marathon five-set win at Moravian University on Friday night, the Drew University women's volleyball team showed little signs of fatigue on Saturday, earning a pair of sweeps at Wilkes University.

The Rangers toppled Landmark Conference newcomer Wilkes University 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 before completing a 3-0 weekend with a 25-13, 26-24, 25-21 win over John Jay College in a non-conference tilt.

The Rangers used tremendous serving and a balanced offense versus Wilkes to push their Landmark Conference record to 4-3. Junior Lauren Gaza served up 10 aces, breaking the school record of seven that she had previously shared, while Drew served up 18 aces as a team, marking the second-most in team history.

Sophomores Teeya Desgoutte and Emily Shirk added nine kills apiece as the Rangers posted their highest hitting percentage of the season (.242) against the Colonels while classmates Inaya Stanford and Abigail Pereira added seven and six kills, respectively. Freshman Alyssa Rachwal distributed 31 assists and also tallied three aces.

Gaza also had a big game defensively, posting 18 digs, while Stanford contributed three blocks.

Desgoutte paced the Rangers with 18 kills and 15 digs against John Jay while Shirk contributed 10 kills and Rachwal handed out another 36 assists. Defensively, Gaza scooped 19 digs against the Bloodhounds.

Drew picks up its schedule on Friday, when they host No. 1-ranked Juniata College in a Landmark Conference match at 6 p.m.
