MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore
Abigail Pereira threw down a team-high 10 kills but the Drew University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision to Arcadia University Friday night in Baldwin Gym.
The Knights (11-16) won by scores of 25-18, 25-11, 25-18.
Pereira made just one error on 22 swings, good for a season-high .409 hitting percentage. Sophomores
Marissa Guajardo and
Emily Shirk added six kills apiece for the Rangers (8-14) while freshman
Alyssa Rachwal distributed 22 assists. Junior
Lauren Gaza contributed 20 digs and two aces.
Estefania Martinez-Sola posted 11 kills and 15 assists to lead Arcadia.
Drew led 10-6 in the opening set, which featured seven ties and three lead changes. But the Knights regrouped after a timeout, eventually taking a 14-13 lead, and used a 5-0 run to open up a 20-15 lead. Arcadia led by at least four the rest of the way.
The second set was tied three times in the early going before the Knights used a 9-2 run to open up a 15-6 lead, and their advantage would not dip below over the remainder of the period.
The final set featured numerous runs, starting with a 9-4 surge from Arcadia to open the game, prompting a Drew timeout. The Rangers answered with a 6-0 run to go in front 10-9 but after a timeout of their own, the Knights used a 7-0 spurt to assume a six-point advantage. Their visitors led by at least five down the stretch.
The Rangers jump right back into action with a tri-match at Kean University on Saturday. Drew takes on Kean at noon and York (Pa.) at 2 p.m.
