MADISON, N.J. - Sophomore
James Cahill scored a pair of first-half goals and the fourth-seeded Drew University men's soccer team downed fifth-seeded Moravian University 3-0 in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championship tournament in Ranger Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Rangers (10-6-2) move on to the championship semifinals, where they will visit top-seeded Catholic University on Thursday at a time to be determined.
Drew tacked on a goal in the 81st minute on a tally from sophomore
Gabe Di Pierro.
Sophomore
Brandon Jachera made three saves to earn his third shutout of the season for the Rangers. Andrew Remias, the Landmark Conference leader in goals-against average and save percentage entering the match, stopped 12 shots for Moravian (6-7-5).
The Greyhounds took the first shot of the game a minute into the contest, but the Rangers largely controlled possession for the remainder of the half, firing off the next 12 shots. It appeared as if the Rangers had struck first when senior
Matt Agudelo rebounded in a shot in the 14th minute, but offside was called.
Drew broke through on their fourth shot in the 17 minute. Agudelo sent in a free kick to the left post, where Cahill headed it over the keeper and into the back of the net for what held up as the game-winning goal.
The Rangers had another near-miss in the 25th minute, when junior
Kevin Kiernan had a well-struck ball slam off the crossbar. But the Blue and Green were quick to strike again.
In the 28th minute, Cahill took a short pass from sophomore
Jared Brown, took two touches forward, and let rip a blast that glanced off a defender and inside the left post. It was Cahill's fifth goal of the season and gave him his second career multi-goal performance.
Moravian had a good look early in the second half, but a header from Ben Scary sailed just over the crossbar.
Junior
Tino Puentes had a chip from the left post saved at the end of a breakaway in the 56th minute. The Rangers then went a man up in the 72nd minute when the Greyhounds were whistled for a red card. Drew took advantage nine minute later, when Di Pierro took a cross from Kiernan and one-timed a shot from the right post for his third tally of the season. The goal also gave Kiernan his conference-leading 11th assist of the year.
Cahill nearly accomplished a hat trick in the 83rd minute but Remias made a diving stop on a low blast.
Drew finished with advantages in both shots (26-8) and corner kicks (9-2).
