MADISON, N.J. - Defender
Meghan Sharkey scored in the 14th minute and the Drew University women's soccer team passed its first postseason test with a 1-0 victory over Susquehanna University in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championship in a frigid Ranger Stadium Tuesday evening.
The third-seeded Rangers (12-6-1) will now visit second-seeded Catholic University in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. No. 5-seeded Elizabethtown College defeated No. 4 Moravian University 2-1 in the other first-round match and will visit top-seeded Scranton in the other semifinal.
It was the second matchup in four days between the two sides, after the sixth-seeded River Hawks (4-9-5) defeated Drew 2-0 in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Freshman
Sarah Crowley made five saves in her postseason debut while posting her sixth clean sheet of the season.
Senior
Rebecca Racine set up the goal for Drew, lofting a perfect free kick into the box from deep on the right side. Sharkey, a graduate student in her first year with the Rangers, deftly headed the ball out of the air and past the keeper for her second goal of the season while giving Racine her team-leading sixth assist of the year.
Both sides attempted four shots in the opening half, and the River Hawks placed two on goal. In the closing minutes of the period, Crowley made her second save when she knocked down a strike from Emily Wertz at the end of a breakaway.
The Rangers had an excellent opportunity to double their lead in the 65th minute, when Racine found herself with the ball at the 18 with Susquehanna keeper Kayleigh Saboja on the ground. But Saboja made a one-handed deflection from point-blank range to keep the visitors within striking distance.
The River Hawks held a 5-4 edge in shots in the second half, when Crowley turned aside three more shots, including a pair of dangerous free kicks inside the final 11 minutes.
Susquehanna finished with a 9-8 edge in shots while Drew posted a 9-4 surplus in corner kicks.
