Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Etown For Third Straight Win

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomores Marissa Guajardo and Teeya Desgoutte combined for 24 kills and the Drew University women's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to three with a 3-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action Friday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers, who improved to 2-1 in conference play, won by scores of 25-21, 26-24, 25-20.

Guajardo tallied 13 kills and just four errors on 29 swings for a .310 hitting performance. Desgoutte posted 11 kills and nine digs.

Sophomore Emily Shirk added seven kills and 19 digs for Drew, which earned its first-ever win over the Blue Jays after Etown won the first two meetings. Junior Lauren Gaza contributed 26 digs and four aces while freshman Alyssa Rachwal dished out 31 assists for the Rangers. Junior Kiara Vasquez added 13 digs and three aces.

Savannah Lesley and Katie Scaggs tallied seven digs apiece for Elizabethtown (7-7, 1-2 LC).

In the opening set, the Rangers took control with a 12-5 run that made it 22-13. The Blue Jays surged late with an 8-2 run to make it 24-21, but Desgoutte threw down a kill – her fifth of the set – to quell the rally.

A 10-5 spurt late in the second set gave Drew some breathing room at 19-12. But the Blue Jays responded with a 4-0 run, and it was the start of a 10-3 outburst then tied the score at 22-all.

The visitors came all the way back to take the lead at 24-23 on a kill from Georgianna Kahley. But that's when Head Coach Alyssa Broccoli called timeout, and her squad responded by winning three straight points to assume a 2-0 match lead. Guajardo led the Rangers with five kills in the middle set.

The final set was close throughout, but a 6-2 spurt but the Rangers up 18-15, and they would not trail the rest of the way. Guajardo fired up another five kills in the set.

Drew returns to action on Saturday, when they take on Susquehanna University in another Landmark Conference tilt starting at 1 p.m.
