MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University field hockey team blanked Catholic University over the final 55 minutes, but two early goals were enough for the Cardinals, who edged the Rangers 2-0 in a Landmark Conference tilt Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
Â
Senior
Olyvia Jackson made 11 saves for the Rangers and became the ninth player in team history to eclipse 300 career stops. She now has 305 saves, tying her with Allison Johnson C'99 for ninth all-time at the Forest.
Â
Jackson saved the first two shots she faced before the Cardinals (7-4, 3-1 LC) were awarded a penalty stroke just 2:43 into the game. Mary Rojack converted to put the visitors on the scoreboard.
Â
Catholic also cashed in on their next shot, as Lauren D'Emilio scored off a cross from Mary Parker. However, Jackson turned aside each of the Cardinals' five additional shots on goal over the remainder of the half and it remained a 2-0 game at the intermission.
Â
The Cardinals took 14 shots in the first half and continue to apply pressure in the third quarter, when they attempted seven more. However, Jackson continued to stand tall, making two more saves in the period.
Â
Drew found an offensive spark in the fourth quarter, when it fired off all four of its shots and received a pair of corners. Junior
Janelle Arch drilled a shot on goal with 7:09 left that was saved by goalie Abigail Kearney before classmate
Lauren Cagliostro placed a shot on frame a minute and a half later that was knocked way on a defensive save from Gracie Burford.
Â
The Rangers made a pair of defensive saves of their own to keep within striking distance, as seniors
Eniyah Garner and
Jackie Melone cleared the line with under five minutes to go. Jackson made two more saves in the fourth quarter to finish with her fifth double-digit save performance of the season.
Â
Drew returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Moravian University at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
