MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's volleyball team continued its challenging non-conference schedule on Wednesday in Baldwin Gym and came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision to SUNY New Paltz.
The Hawks, who entered the night sporting an 18-6 record and a No. 3 regional ranking, won 25-17 in all three sets.
Sophomores
Teeya Desgoutte and
Abigail Pereira combined for 15 kills for the Rangers, posting eight and seven terminations, respectively. Sophomore
Marissa Guajardo added six kills while freshman
Alyssa Rachwal distributed 19 assists. Juniors
Lauren Gaza and
Kiara Vasquez contributed 14 and 10 digs, respectively, while junior
Alyssa Baron threw down three blocks.
Jamie Albrecht paced New Paltz with 10 kills.
The Hawks used a 9-3 run midway through the first set to open up a 17-10 cushion, and they would lead by at least six the rest of the way. The second set was close early on, and the Rangers trailed just 15-13 before New Paltz created a bit of a gap with a 4-1 spurt. They visitors would lead by at least four down the stretch in the middle stanza, when Desgoutte fired up four of her kills.
Drew led by an 11-9 count in the final set before the Hawks used a 7-0 run to take control. The Rangers trailed just 17-14 before New Paltz pulled away for good with a 5-0 surge.
The Blue and Green conclude the regular season on Saturday, when they host Rowan University and Stevens Institute in a tri-match. The Rangers take on Rowan at 10 a.m. before facing Stevens at noon.
