NEW YORK – The Drew University women's basketball team cut a 20-point deficit down to six late in the game, but host John Jay College held on for a 58-49 win over the Rangers in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening.
The Rangers (1-2) received nine points from freshman guard
Miabella Diaz while senior forward
Jamie Struble posted eight points and a pair of blocked shots. Sophomore guard
Maddy Morgan contributed with five points and eight rebounds.
Chayanne Kelly scored 23 points to lead the Bloodhounds (3-1).
The Bloodhounds (2-0) led 51-31 with 3:21 left in the third quarter before the Rangers climbed back into it with a 14-0 run spanning the final two stanzas. Drew closed the third period on a 6-0 spurt to make it a 14-point game before running off the first eight points of the final quarter. A Diaz 3-pointer made it 51-43 before a fastbreak layup from freshman guard
Amy Rachilla cut the deficit to 51-45 with 6:43 remaining.
John Jay went up by nine with 4:33 showing before freshman guard
Sarah Smout knocked down a jumper and Diaz went 1-for-2 at the line to make it 55-49 with 3:01 showing. But that's when defense took over the game, as the Bloodhounds scored the only three points down the stretch.
The Rangers are now off for two weeks before playing their Landmark Conference opener on Nov. 29 at Moravian University starting at 7 p.m.
