MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's basketball team broke the school and Landmark Conference record for 3-pointers in a game en route to its second straight 100-point showing, downing John Jay College 112-79 in the first round of the 38th Rose City Classic on Friday evening at FDU-Florham.
Â
Drew and FDU are co-hosting this year's tournament, with the opening day taking place at FDU and the second day being held at Drew.
Â
The Rangers, 3-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 season, will now take on FDU-Florham in the tournament final on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Baldwin Gym. John Jay will face Pratt Institute in the consolation game starting at 4 p.m. FDU defeated Pratt 77-61 in the other first-round game.
Â
The Rangers connected on 23 shots from beyond the arc – one more than the previous Drew and Landmark record set in a 120-73 win over Penn State Abington in the consolation game of the 2014 Rose City Classic. They attempted 40 triples and shot 57.5% from 3-point range.
Â
Six different players scored in double figures for Drew, which tied the fifth-highest scoring output in team history. Fifteen Rangers found the scoring column, including five who knocked down at least three 3-pointers.
Â
Senior guard
James Anderson shot 5-for-8 from 3-point range and tied a career-high 19 points for the Rangers. Classmate
Andrew Turco posted a perfect shooting night, connecting on all six of his shots, including four from beyond the arc. Junior guard
Papie Roberts popped in 15 points while sinking 3-of-6 shot from 3-point territory.Â
Â
Freshman guard

Â
John Jay got out to a fast start and led 6-0 and 19-11 while making its first eight field-goal attempts. The 'Hounds still led by four with 11:37 on the clock before Drew erupted for 35-15 run to end the half, opening up a 56-40 lead at the intermission. Six different Rangers connected from downtown during the decisive run.
Â
After shooting 12-for-23 from long range in the first half, Drew continued to stay red-hot from the outside early in the second period, knocking down five 3s in the opening five minutes to push its lead to 29. Fittingly, the Rangers hit the century mark on a 3-pointer from freshman guard
Patrick Washington with 7:07 still left. Less than a minute later, freshman guard
Caleb Edwards gave Drew its largest lead of the night with a fastbreak dunk that made it 102-65.
Drew displayed 64.7% marksmanship (11-for-17) from 3-point territory in the second half.
Â
The Rangers will be making their seventh straight appearance in the Rose City Classic final and are seeking their first title since winning the 2018 event.
