MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's basketball team outscored Hamilton College 46-31 in the second half and the Rangers topped the defending NESCAC champions 77-65 in Baldwin Gym Tuesday evening.
With the victory, the Rangers also improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 1979-80 season.
Senior guard
James Anderson scored 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-6 marksmanship from beyond the arc, for Drew. Junior forward
Peso Crump added 15 points and six rebounds while sophomore forward
David Musial posted his second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard
Andrew Turco and junior guard
Papie Roberts added 10 points apiece for the Rangers.
Hank Morgan posted 21 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots for the Continentals (2-2), who received votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll.
The Rangers outscored Hamilton 20-3 at the foul line, shooting 20-for-25 at the charity stripe.
Hamilton led for nearly the entire first half and enjoyed its largest lead of the night at 30-22 with 5:00 on the clock. However, Anderson nailed consecutive 3-pointers, capped by an NBA-range triple, and drew a charge at the other end of the floor to spark a 9-2 run for the Rangers. The Continentals dropped in a put-back at the buzzer and carried a 34-31 lead into the locker room.
The visitors led 41-36 with 18:19 remaining, but that's when the Rangers broke out with an extended 16-3 run to take the lead for good. Anderson scored seven straight points late in the surge, and a jumper from Crump with 12:04 left made it a 52-44 affair.
The Continentals edged to within three with 5:04 left, but that's as close as they would get, as sophomore guard
Devon Musial single-handedly responded with a 7-0 run as the Rangers took a double-digit lead. Musial buried a deep jumper from the right corner, hit a pair of free throws, then drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to make it 67-57 with 2:40 remaining.
Drew led by at least eight the rest of the way and went 7-for-8 at the foul line inside the final two minutes.
The Rangers are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 29, when they host Moravian University at 7 p.m. in their Landmark Conference opener.
