Women’s Volleyball Falls to Etown in Landmark First Round

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Drew University women's volleyball team competed in its first-ever postseason match, but came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision at Elizabethtown College in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championship tournament Tuesday evening.

The No. 3-seeded Blue Jays (17-10) won by scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 and will now visit No. 2 University of Scranton in the semifinals on Thursday.

The No. 6-seeded Rangers, competing in just their third season as a varsity program, were paced by sophomore Teeya Desgoutte, who posted her 14th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 11 digs. Classmate Marissa Guajardo added six kills and three blocks.

Freshman Alyssa Rachwal handed out 26 assists to go with nine digs while junior Lauren Gaza tallied 20 digs and a pair of aces. Sophomore Emily Shirk contributed with 12 digs.

Karlee Ray paced a balanced Blue Jay attack with 10 kills.

In the opening set, Drew led 11-10 after an ace from Gaza, but Elizabethtown went in front with a 6-2 spurt. Later in the period, the hosts pulled away with a 6-0 run.

The second set began with the Rangers racing out to a 5-2 lead, with Desgoutte capping the run with four consecutive kills. However, that's when the Blue Jays used another 6-0 to go ahead to stay. Desgoutte's seventh and final kill of the set pulled the Rangers to within 19-15, but Etown ended the stanza on a 6-1 run.

The third set was the closest of the night, as neither side led by more than three. The Rangers held a 16-13 lead before the Blue Jays scored six unanswered points to go in front by three. Drew rallied with a 4-0 run, however, receiving two kills from Desgoutte and one apiece from Shirk and sophomore Inaya Stanford to assume a 20-19 lead. The nip-and-tuck affair continued down the stretch, and Desgoutte's final kill of the night pulled her team to within 24-23 before the Jays ended the match on the next point.
