JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Drew University men's basketball team set the program record for the longest winning streak with 110-90 non-conference victory at York (N.Y.) College on Saturday.
The victory was the 10th in a row to start the season for the undefeated Rangers (10-0), who broke the previous school record of nine consecutive wins set by the 2010-11 squad.
Drew has now doubled the previous best start in team history, which was 5-0 entering the season.
The Rangers broke open a close game with an 11-2 run midway through the second half, turning a five-point lead into a 14-point cushion with 6:36 remaining.
Junior guard
Papie Roberts scored 20 points and shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range while dishing out six assists for the Rangers, who posted their third 100-point game of the season and tied the ninth-high scoring output in team history. Senior guard
Andrew Turco also scored 20 points while connecting on 6-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc, including a big trio of 3-pointers at the end of the first half and two additional clutch triples to cap the team's aforementioned second-half run.
Three other Rangers scored 12 points, including sophomore forward
David Musial, who also posted seven rebounds and four steals. Junior guard
Josh Kline scored 12 points and dished out six assists while freshman guard
Eli Yusavage scored a dozen points as well. Senior guard
James Anderson also reached double figures with 11 points.
The Rangers shot a season-best 94.4% (17-18) at the foul line and forced the Cardinals (2-9) into 28 turnovers that were converted into 39 points.
Twelve of the 15 Rangers who entered the game scored a point.
Drew withstood a 38-point, eight-rebound effort from York's Olawale Kila, who shot 16-for-18 from the floor.
The Rangers led for majority of the opening half and a jumper from junior forward
Peso Crump made it 27-18 with 10:06 on the clock. But York did not go away and came back to take the lead. The Cardinals enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 44-39 with 1:37 left in the opening half before Turco single-handedly accounted for a 9-0 Ranger run. He canned a trey on three consecutive possessions to make it 48-44 before York scored the final two points of the half to make it a 48-46 game at the break.
The hosts led by five again early in the second half before another 9-0 run put the visitors in front to stay. Kline and Crump each knocked down a 3-pointer during the stretch while Yusavage capped it with a pair of free throws, making 59-55 with 14:52 remaining.
The Rangers nudged their lead to 11 on another 3-ball from Kline with 10:14 on the clock. But a layup from Kila capped an 8-2 York run and cut the deficit to 76-71 with 8:37 remaining before Drew embarked on its game-clinching run.
Roberts kick-started the surge with a 3-pointer before
David Musial went 2-for-2 at the foul line, making it 81-71 with 7:48 to go. Turco then capped the rally with his final two 3's as the Rangers' advantage swelled to 87-73 with 6:36 to go.
Drew was just getting started, however, and scored 23 points in the final 5:50.
Following a two-week break from competition, the Rangers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30, when they host Lebanon Valley College at 2 p.m. in their final non-conference matchup of the season.
