Women’s Basketball Edged at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior guard Joey Meyers and freshman guard Madelyn Morgan led the Rangers with 14 points apiece, but the Drew University women's basketball team was nipped by Moravian University, 55-52, in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening.

With the win, Moravian improved to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Rangers moved to 15-5 overall with a conference record of 5-4.

The game started off fast-paced as both teams came out in full court press and traded buckets from 8:42 to the 6:07 mark of the first quarter, when Moravian held an 8-7 lead. The Greyhounds would go on to finish the period up 16-9.

In the second quarter, the Rangers took control of the game, with Meyers scoring nine of her 14 points in the stanza. Meyers, who also grabbed 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season, outscored the entire Moravian team that finished with just eight points in the quarter. The Rangers finished the half on a 12-2 run to go into the locker room with a slight 26-24 lead.

The two sides continued this back and forth tilt in the third quarter, which looked similar to the start of the first with both teams trading baskets. Senior guard Gwen Alberici hit the final free throw in the last seconds of the period, deadlocking the score at 37-37 going into a critical fourth quarter.

The last 10 minutes of this contest started off strong for the Rangers as Drew went on an 10-2 run to take a 47-41 lead with 5:05 to play. The Greyhounds would not go away, however, and scored nine straight points to regain the lead with 1:38 left on the board.

Drew kept fighting, though, and with 1:19 to go, senior guard Katrina Wojtowicz drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game. But Moravian forward Tessa Zamolyi responded with a jumper and connected on a free throw with 16 seconds left, setting the final score, and the Rangers had a potential game-tying 3-pointer shot blocked in the closing seconds.

The Greyhounds were paced by three double0doubles from Zamolyi (15 points, 10 rebounds), Kayla Yoegel (13 points, 10 rebounds), and Sam Osorio (10 points, 12 rebounds).

The Rangers return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Susquehanna University for a 2:00 tipoff.
