ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. posted 22 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore guard
Papie Roberts netted a season-high 20 points and the Drew University men's basketball team pulled away late for an 81-74 Landmark Conference victory at Elizabethtown College Wednesday evening.
The Rangers (13-11, 5-8 LC) led just 69-68 with less than three minutes left before ending the game on a 12-6 run. Six different players scored during the crucial stretch for Drew, which clinched its sixth consecutive winning season.
Junior guard
Andrew Turco added 15 points, four assists, and four steals for the Rangers while senior forward
Michael Kane posted 13 points and six rebounds.
Dylan Rowe led the Blue Jays (10-13, 4-9 LC) with 24 points and eight rebounds.
Drew led for nearly the entire first half after starting the game on a 14-9 run, with freshman forward
Kevin Cronin knocking down a pair of early 3-pointers. Later in the quarter, Roberts scored eight points to fuel a 10-4 spurt that put the Rangers up 32-24 with 7:16 on the clock. Roberts started the run with back-to-back 3-pointers before capping it with a layup.
The Blue Jays rallied at the end of the half, however, as a 9-2 surge put the hosts up 40-39. Kane converted a put-back at the buzzer and Elizabethtown led 43-42 at the break.
Etown led by as much as five early in the second half, but the Rangers answered with a 10-2 run to reclaim the lead. But it was a back-and-forth affair most of the period before a pair of Roberts free throws with 4:53 left put the Rangers ahead to stay at 69-68.
Neither side would score over the next two minutes before McBurnie broke the drought with a lay-up at the 2:46 mark, kicking off the team's decisive run. Junior guard
James Anderson followed up with a 3-pointer 26 seconds later before Kane dropped in a lay-up. A free throw from freshman forward
David Musial gave the Rangers a 77-68 lead with 1:09 to go.
The Blue Jays pulled to within six (78-72) with 22 seconds left, but Roberts effectively shut the door with a pair of foul shots with 18 ticks showing.
The Rangers close out the season on Saturday, when they visit Landmark Conference co-leader Catholic University at 4 p.m.
