POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Six different Rangers scored a goal, but the Drew University women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-6 decision at Vassar College in its season opener Friday evening.
The Brewers used a fast start to take control early, outscoring the Rangers 11-3 in the first half.
Vassar struck just 23 seconds into the game, but the Rangers pulled even when senior
Jenna Draney finished off a pass from junior
Lizzy Barrett with 13:30 left in the opening period. However, the hosts came back with a 5-0 run to assume a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Junior
Emma DiPatri made it a four-goal game when she scored in the opening minute of the second quarter, but that's when Vassar went on another 5-0 surge. Freshman
Aubrey Welch netted her first collegiate goal with 12 seconds left in the half for Drew.
The Rangers held Vassar to five goals in the second half, including just one in the fourth quarter, but were unable to get closer than seven. Barrett and junior
Ella Champigny scored one goal apiece in the third quarter before senior
Hailey Simmons netted the game's final tally with 41 ticks showing.
Senior Anna Horne finished with eight saves for Drew while Lauren Johns stopped five shots for Vassar. Maddy Kretten paced the Brewer offense with five goals and three assists.
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, visiting Rowan University at 5 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
