MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's volleyball team won the opening set, but Widener University rallied and handed the Rangers a 3-1 setback Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
The Pride won by scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12.
Sophomore
Jacob Sledz led the Rangers (6-11) with 16 kills and seven digs while classmate
Ephraim Smith added 12 kills. Sophomore
Huriel Perez registered 37 assists, eight digs, and three aces, and senior
Furat Alhayek threw down four blocks. Sophomore
Bryan Do added 12 digs for Drew.
Matthew Christ paced Widener (11-8-1) with 20 kills and 15 digs.
The Rangers opened the match on a flurry, outscoring the Pride 7-1. Widener came back and pulled to within 24-22 but Sledz ended the set with a kill.
In a back-and-forth second set, Widener led just 19-18 before using a 4-0 spurt to break it open. In the third period, the Rangers led 10-8 early before the Pride went on a 10-2 run to go ahead to stay. Widener never trailed in the final set after scoring the first two points of the set and gradually pulling away.
The Rangers are back in action with a tri-match at Hunter College on Saturday. Drew takes on Hunter at 10 a.m. before facing Penn State Behrend at noon.
