MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team reeled off a 6-0 run over a 12-minute stretch overlapping the third and fourth quarters, breaking open a close game while topping non-conference foe Ursinus College 17-13 in their home opener Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
Junior
Ella Champigny led the Rangers (2-3) with a career-high-tying five goals while classmate
Lizzy Barrett (four goals, one assist) and senior
Jenna Draney (two goals, three assists) also notched five points apiece. Junior
Mary Kate Davidson tossed in a career-high three goals to go with one assist, senior
Hailey Simmons netted two goals and one assist, and senior
Anna Horne collected 15 saves.
Grace Lynch and Julia McCann scored three goals apiece for the Bears (2-4).
With the game tied 11-11, Davidson kicked off Drew's decisive run, scoring with 1:39 left in the third quarter. Barrett followed up with 31 ticks showing, converting a feed from Draney to put the Rangers up 13-11 heading into the final stanza.
Drew continued to roll in the fourth quarter, when Draney set up Simmons three minutes into the period. Davidson assisted Champigny with 10:51 left, then scored off a feed from senior
Maggie Nealley with 7:03 left. Simmons capped the outburst at the 4:21 mark, with Draney assisting yet again, before Ursinus scored a pair of late goals.
Including the 11-11 tie, the opening 39 minutes of the game featured six ties and three lead changes. The Bears scored twice in the opening three minutes, but the Rangers responded with a 4-0 run to end the first quarter. Barrett, Draney, Davidson, and Champigny all scored in the early going for Drew.
Ursinus came back to take the lead on three more occasions, the last coming at the 5:46 mark of the second quarter to make it a 7-6 game. Draney and Barrett each scored to put the Rangers up 8-7 but the Bears answered with 1:50 on the clock and it was an 8-8 game at the intermission.
Freshman
Aubrey Welch struck two and a half minutes into the second half before Champigny went back-to-back 33 seconds apart to push Drew's lead to 11-8 with 11:51 to go in the third quarter. Ursinus came back with three unanswered goals in a minute to tie the game, setting up Drew's late rally.
Drew continues its season on Wednesday, when it visits Lebanon Valley College at 5 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
