MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night in style with a 3-0 sweep of SUNY Old Westbury Tuesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers won by scores of 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.
Before the match, a brief ceremony was held to honor
Furat Alhayek and
Matt Burke, the first two Rangers to graduate from the Drew men's volleyball program, which is in its second year as a varsity program. Both players enjoyed big nights, with Alhayek leading all players with a career-high eight kills to go with three aces. Burke threw down a career-high five kills while tying his career-best of four blocks.
Sophomore
Bryan Do contributed a career-high seven kills to go with three aces while classmate
Huriel Perez dished out 27 assists. Sophomore
Jacob Sledz contributed seven digs.
The Panthers (0-13) led in the early going, jumping out to an 8-5 lead. Old Westbury led 9-7 before Drew reeled off 14 unanswered points, with Perez serving on the last 13, to assume a commanding 21-9 lead. Sophomore
C.J. Addeo fired up four kills in his lone set of the night for the Rangers.
Drew never trailed in the second set starting the period on an 11-4 run. After the visitors inched to within six, the Rangers broke it open with 6-0 run.
After the Panthers scored the first two points of the final set, Drew answered with a 7-0 run. However, the Rangers led just 13-10 before pulling away with an 11-2 run.
Drew plays its final home match of the season on Thursday, when it takes on Wilkes University at 7 p.m.
