Fast Start Propels Women’s Lacrosse Over Farmingdale State

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team erupted for 12 goals in the second quarter and the Rangers topped Farmingdale State University 20-10 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

It was a 3-3 game at the end of the first quarter before the Rangers (4-4) broke it open, outscoring the Rams 12-2 in the second period en route to their highest scoring output of the season.

Freshman Aubrey Welch paced Drew with four goals and 10 draw controls while junior Ella Champigny contributed two goals, four assists, and six draw controls. Junior Mary Kate Davidson scored three goals while senior Lizzy Barrett added two goals and two assists. Junior Emma DiPatri notched two goals and one assist, and seniors Jenna Draney and Maggie Nealley scored two goals apiece.

Between the pipes, senior Anna Horne made seven saves while sophomore Arianna Mendez stops all three shots she faced while playing the final 18 minutes.

Nicole Pontecorvo led Farmingdale (2-5) with three goals and one assist.

Three different Rangers scored in the opening quarter for Drew before Welch erupted for four second-quarter goals. Barrett and Nealley also struck twice while Davidson, Champigny, freshman Emma Gallaro, and Simmons each found paydirt and the Rangers led 15-5 at the half.

The Rams rallied in the third quarter with a 5-1 run to make it a 16-10 game heading into the final period. But that's when the Rangers clamped down defensively, blanking Farmingdale while yielding just three shots in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Draney scored a pair of goals while Davidson and DiPatri added one tally each as the Rangers posted their first 20-goal game since April 30 of last season.

Drew is back in Ranger Stadium on Thursday, when it takes on Whittier College at 4 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
