Women’s Lacrosse Scores 20 Again in Win Over Whittier

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team posted its second straight 20-goal game on Thursday, downing Whittier College 20-13 in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (5-4), who won their third game in a row, never trailed after racing out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and eventually extended their advantage to 18-6 after scoring seven goals in each of the two middle quarters.

Junior Lizzy Barrett led the Rangers with five goals and two assists while senior Hailey Simmons posted three goals and one assist. Senior Jenna Draney registered three goals and nine draw controls, and junior Mary Kate Davidson added three goals, seven ground balls, and three caused turnovers.

Also contributing were junior Emma DiPatri (two goals, two assists), junior Ella Champigny (two goals, one assist), and freshman Aubrey Welch (two goals, eight draw controls). Senior Anna Horne made 11 saves over the first 42 minutes.

Payton Climer and Samantha Nimmo scored three goals apiece for the Poets (4-4), who hail from southern California.

Simmons scored twice in the first quarter for Drew before Draney and Davidson netted two goals each in the second quarter as the Rangers built an 11-5 halftime advantage.

Champigny scored with 15 seconds left in the first half, and it was the start of an 8-1 Drew run that broke it open. She scored a second goal during the decisive stretch while Barrett and DiPatri also struck twice as the hosts made it an 18-6 game with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

Whittier made a late push, as a 7-1 run cut the cap to 19-13 with 2:33 left but the rally ran out of time.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Moravian University at 1 p.m.
