Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Shootout at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Ella Champigny netted five goals and three assists but the Drew University women's lacrosse team fell 18-16 in high-scoring Landmark Conference affair at Moravian University on Saturday.
 
The Rangers (5-5, 1-1 LC) trailed 11-6 at the half but rallied to outscore the Greyhounds 10-7 in the final two quarters. Drew pulled to within two on three occasions before Moravian used a 3-0 spurt in the fourth quarter to pull away.
 
Champigny tied career-highs for both goals and points as the Rangers closed an explosive offensive week with 56 goals in three games.
 
Senior Hailey Simmons added four goals for Drew while classmate Jenna Draney tossed in three goals and collected eight draw controls. Junior Lizzy Barrett posted two goals and two assists, and junior Emma DiPatri notched one goal and two helpers. Junior Catherine DiPatri recorded three draw controls, and senior Anna Horne made 18 saves.
 
Brittany Bill registered five goals and one assist for the Greyhounds (6-5, 1-1 LC).
 
Simmons scored both of Drew's first-quarter goals as Moravian jumped to a 4-2 lead.
 
The middle two quarters saw a combined 21 goals. In the second period, four Rangers scored Drew's four goals, as Champigny, freshman Aubrey Welch, Simmons, and Emma DiPatri all converted to pull Drew to within 7-6 with 8:30 on the clock. However, the Greyhounds ended the half on a 4-0 run to open up their five-goal halftime lead.
 
The Rangers turned things around immediately in the second half, scoring three times in the first five minutes. Simmons scored before Champigny struck twice in 34 seconds to make it 11-9 with 10:05 showing in the third quarter.
 
Moravian answered with three of the next four goals to go up 14-10, but this time it was Draney's turn to score consecutive goals, with her second pulling the Rangers to within two once again. The Greyhounds netted the final goal of the quarter to assume a 15-12 lead heading into the final stanza.
 
Draney scored just 18 seconds into the fourth quarter to bring Drew within two once again before Moravian embarked on their key 3-0 run, making it 18-13 with 5:34 to go. Barrett answered for the Rangers with 4:09 left and Drew continued to threaten over the next several minutes. But the Rangers had one shot saved by Moravian keeper Rylee Soltis and another hit the post.
 
Drew scored twice in the final 26 seconds, receiving tallies from Barrett and Champigny.
 
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they host Kean University in a non-conference matchup starting at 4 p.m.
