Women’s Lacrosse Rolls to Victory in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team rolled to its first victory of the season with a resounding 22-5 win over Grove City College on Sunday during the team's spring break trip to Florida.

After Grove City scored the first goal of the game, the Rangers (1-2) broke it open with a 9-0 run.

Drew outshot the Wolverines 38-28, committed just seven turnovers, and was a perfect 21-for-21 on clears.

Senior Jenna Draney led the Rangers with a career-high six goals while junior Ella Champigny tallied a career-best five goals and three assists. Junior Lizzy Barrett netted three goals and four helpers, and senior Hailey Simmons contributed four goals. Freshman Emily Monaco added one goal and three assists.

Defensively, senior Anna Horne made 13 saves over three quarters of play before sophomore Arianna Mendez stopped one shot while playing the fourth quarter. Junior Eniyah Garner pitched in with four caused turnovers.

Champigny put the Rangers on the scoreboard two and a half minutes into the game before Barrett gave Drew the lead for good. Draney and Simmons each scored two consecutive goals before Draney struck again to make it 7-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Champigny and junior Emma DiPatri completed Drew's decisive early run before Grove City answered with two of the next three goals. However, that's when Drew reeled off a 5-0 run to end the half to assume a 15-3 lead at the break. Simmons netted her final two goals of the game in the quarter.

The Rangers went on to outscore the Wolverines 3-1 in the third quarter and 4-1 in the final stanza. Five different Rangers combined to score the team's final seven goals, with Draney and Champigny tossing in two goals apiece.

Drew concludes its trip on Tuesday, when it takes on Widener University at 10 a.m.
