CLEARWATER, Fla. – Junior
Lizzy Barrett scored her 100th career point, but despite a late rally the Drew University women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-10 decision to Widener University on Tuesday in the Rangers' second and final game of their spring break trip to Florida.
Barrett reached her milestone with her sixth and final point of the game – a goal with 11:37 left in the contest. She finished with three goals and three assists, upping her career totals to 67 goals and 33 assists.
Widener (4-2) led 8-2 at halftime before the Rangers came roaring back with a 7-1 run, with a goal from senior
Hailey Simmons making it 11-9 with 2:33 remaining. However, the Pride answered with a goal at the 1:01 mark before senior
Jenna Draney set the final score with nine seconds left.
Simmons added three goals, one assist, and four draw controls for Drew (1-3) while Draney also contributed three goals. Senior
Anna Horne saved eight shots for the Rangers.
Katie Ward led Widener with seven goals.
Draney and Barrett each scored in the opening two minutes to put Drew up 2-0, but that's when Widener ended the first half on an 8-0 run.
The Rangers turned things around immediately coming out of the intermission, breaking out with a 3-0 spurt over the opening 7:15 of the half. Barrett played the role of playmaker during the spurt, assisting on all three goals that were scored by Simmons, junior
Mary Kate Davidson, and Draney as the Rangers pulled to within 8-5.
Ward halted the spurt when she scored with 2:39 left in the third quarter, then struck again with 13:39 left in the game as the Pride went up 10-5. However, Drew refused to go quietly and answered with a 4-1 surge. Barrett scored consecutive unassisted tallies to make it 10-7, and after a Widener goal it was Simmons' turn to go back-to-back, making it 11-9 with 2:33 left. However, Ward won the ensuing draw, then tossed in a free-position goal with 1:01 showing before Draney's final tally.
Drew is back in action on March 18, when it hosts Ursinus College at 3 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
