AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Drew University baseball team opened its spring break trip to Florida in exciting fashion, sweeping a doubleheader from Elms College on Monday.
Â
The Rangers rallied from early 6-0 hole to capture the opener 9-8 in 10 innings on a walk-off single from junior
Nate Miller, then prevailed 5-3 in the second game.
Â
Drew (6-1) has now won its last six games, matching the team's longest winning streak since the 2019 season.
Â
Junior
Anthony Hernandez enjoyed a big day at the plate for the Rangers, finishing 4-for-9 with three runs, one double, a home run, and a pair of RBIs. Sophomore
Ryan Jones went 3-for-7 with three RBIs for the day while junior
Luis Fuentes and Miller each went 3-for-8, with Miller also going deep.
Â
In the opener, the Rangers trailed 8-7 heading into the bottom of the 10th when junior
Anthony Diaz led off with a single to left. Sophomore
Will Fritch followed up with a double to center, scoring Diaz with the tying run. Two batters later, Miller singled into left to end the game.
Â
The Blazers (2-2) led 6-0 after just two innings of play, but the Rangers erupted with seven runs from the third through the sixth innings. Highlighting the run was an RBI-double from Hernandez in the third and a run-scoring single from Jones that tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth.
Â
In the sixth inning, Hernandez reached on a two-out error before Fuentes singled into center. Hernandez came all the way around to score on a throwing error by the centerfielder to give the Rangers a 7-6 lead.
Â
In the meantime, several Drew relief pitchers helped keep the Blazers at bay. Sophomore
Connor Ruscansky entered the game in the first and allowed just two unearned runs over two innings before senior
Nick Pellegrino came on to blank Elms on two hits over three innings.
Â
The Blazers pulled even in the top of the seventh, but with runners on the corners and two out senior
Giovanni DeGiglio entered in relief of freshman
TJ Shuman and struck out a batter to end the inning.
Â
DeGiglio went on to fire back-to-back scoreless innings in the eighth and the ninth, fanning four more along the way, before Elms pushed across an unearned run on a bases-loaded walk in the 10th, setting up Drew's game-winning rally in the bottom half.
Â
Fritch, Miller, Hernandez, Fuentes, and Jones all collected two hits apiece for the Rangers while DeGiglio (3-0) earned the win, tossing the final 3 1/3 innings and striking out six.
Â
The second game was scoreless over the first two innings before Elms struck first again with a run in the third versus sophomore starter
Raiden Yost. However, the Rangers bounced back immediately in the fourth, starting with a leadoff homer from Hernandez that hit the leftfield foul pole.
Â
Drew was not done, however, as sophomore
Dallas Lorenzetti knocked in a run with a double before Jones chased home two more with a double to make it 4-1.
Â
The Blazers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. But Drew restored its three-run lead with its second consecutive leadoff homer, as Miller launched a blast over the leftfield fence to start the fifth.
Â
Elms threatened in the bottom of the seventh, reaching on a one-out error before scoring once and bringing the tying run to the plate. But freshman
Devan Sutaria induced a game-ending groundout to nail down his first collegiate save.
Â
Making his first career start, Yost (1-0) worked 5 2/3 innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. He scattered five hits while striking out three. Sutaria came on to record the last four outs, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
Hernandez ripped two more hits in the nightcap.
Â
Drew continues its trip to the Sunshine State on Tuesday, when it takes on Cazenovia College in a single nine-inning game starting at 9:45 a.m.
