Softball Pushes Winning Streak to Six

NAPLES, Fla. – The Drew University softball team continued its tremendous spring break performance, topping Swarthmore College and Clark University on Thursday to push its winning streak to six.

Senior Bailey Comeau fired a five-hit shutout in the opener as the Rangers (7-1) won 6-0. Then against Clark, Drew rallied in extra innings for the second time this week as sophomore Fran O'Kleasky stroked a walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth to lift Drew to a 6-5 victory.

Against Swarthmore, Comeau found herself locked up in a pitcher's duel with the Garnet's Sarah Schab and Meg Ozawa. It was still a scoreless game heading into the sixth, but that's when the Rangers got their bats going.

Freshman Haley Meierhofer sparked the rally with an infield single before junior Madi Baldwin followed up with a double, putting runners on second and third. Sophomore Delaney O'Donoghue then hit a high hopper to Ozawa, who overthrew first base, allowing Meierhofer to score what held up as game-winning run.

Sophomore Mackenzie Pisani added an RBI-single to score pinch-runner Ashlyn Cassetty, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the top of the seventh the Rangers put the game out of reach with four additional runs. Meierhofer reached on an error, allowing senior Madi Precht to score, before Baldwin followed up with a two-run single to make it a 5-0 game. Pisani then doubled to right, scoring Baldwin to set the final score.

Comeau (3-0) was in control throughout the game and allowed just one runner to reach second through the first six innings. The Garnet threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Comeau induced a groundout to end the game. She struck out six to earn her third career shutout.

In the second game, Pisani got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first on a RBI single to left, scoring senior Molly O'Brien.

Clark responded, however, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to assume a 2-1 lead. The Cougars would add another two runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Rangers fought their way back, however, and a sacrifice fly from O'Brien made it 4-2 in the fifth.  Then in the bottom of the sixth Drew scored two more runs to tie the game, eventually sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Clark took the lead after a runner was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker rule, bunted to third, and brought home on a groundout to make it 5-4.

In the bottom half, Pisani was placed at second to start the inning, and Baldwin followed up with a double to put runners on second and third. O'Kleasky then came up clutch, singling down the leftfield line to score Pisani. Comeau, who pinch-ran for Baldwin, came around to score on a fielding error by the leftfielder to secure the 6-5 win. It was the team's third victory in eight games to start the season in which the Rangers trailed after the fifth inning.

Sophomore Teagan Bradley fired 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief to earn the win for the Rangers, allowing just one unearned run. Classmate Tyler Saunders worked the first 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

The Rangers finish their southern swing on Friday, when they take on Western Connecticut State at 9 a.m. and John Jay College at 11 a.m.
