NEWARK, N.J. – Senior
Madi Precht broke Drew's career hits record while senior
Molly O'Brien set the single-season school record for home runs as the Rangers swept Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.
The Rangers (22-11) won the opener 8-3 before capturing the second game 12-4 in six innings.
Precht finished 6-for-9 over the twinbill, collecting three hits in each game. Her final hit of the day, a sharp single to left, was the 165th of her career – one more than Heather Ronchi C'18 accumulated from 2015-18.
In addition to her latest milestone, Precht has also established Drew career records for runs scored and stolen bases this season, marks that now stand at 118 and 62, respectively.
O'Brien set her record on her first at-bat of the day, blasting a towering shot to centerfield for her eighth long ball of the season to better the former mark set by Kerry Crowley C'08 in 2008. O'Brien has now established Ranger season records for both homers and stolen bases (32).
Drew's victory in the opener marked the 500th win in program history.
The Rangers piled up 14 hits in the first game, with Precht and sophomore
Mackenzie Pisani each finishing 3-for-4. O'Brien, junior
Madi Baldwin, and sophomore
Deja Robinson each added two hits apiece.
In the circle, senior
Brianna Seals tossed a complete-game four-hitter, allowing just two earned while striking out a pair.
Drew led 3-0 in the first inning before the Scarlet Raiders (7-23) came back to tie the game after two innings of play. But Seals was nearly perfect over the last five innings, when she faced the minimum 15 batters while allowing only a single. She retired 16 of the final 17 batters she faced.
The Rangers went ahead for good with a two-run fifth, which included an RBI-single from Pisani and a double steal that scored Robinson. Drew set the final score with a three-run sixth.
In the second game, the Rangers trailed 4-1 after the first inning but scored 11 unanswered runs over the last five innings. Drew pounded out another 16 hits in the nightcap and was the beneficiary of nine errors.
The Rangers embarked on their comeback with a run in the second, then went ahead to stay with a three-run, four-hit third that made it 5-4. Drew broke it open with three runs on four hits and three errors in the fourth and four runs on one hit and four errors in the sixth.
Sophomore
Tyler Saunders blanked Newark over the last five innings and worked her second career complete game, tossing a nine-hitter with three strikeouts.
O'Brien finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the second game while Precht and Pisani also collected three hits apiece. Baldwin went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while Robinson added two hits and two runs.
The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they host Centenary University in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in their final regular-season home games of the season.
