Women’s Tennis Tops Stevens in Regular-Season Finale

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Drew University women's tennis team capped the regular season on a high note, downing Stevens Institute of Technology 5-4 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers (16-2), ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division III Region III poll, extended their winning streak to seven and have now won two more matches than any team in program history. Drew also avenged a loss to the Ducks in the first round of last year's NCAA Division III Championships.

Stevens (8-9) won two of three doubles matches to assume a 2-1 lead. Senior Sanne Bloemendaal and junior Melina Christodoulou claimed Drew's doubles point with an 8-6 victory at the No. 2 spot, improving to 11-1 on the season.

Drew rallied in singles play, winning four of six matches. Freshman Sofiya Lebedeva, ranked third in the region, captured a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) decision at No. 1, improving to 14-2 on the season and 12-1 in dual matches.

The Rangers also controlled the middle of the lineup, winning at Nos. 3-5. Sophomore Mary Kalorin captured a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 3, moving to 14-4 on the season, while Bloemendaal earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4, pusher her record to 11-2. Freshman Natalia Zamora added a three-set victory at No. 5, rallying for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph.

Drew will begin its Landmark Conference title defense on Wednesday, when the top-seeded Rangers host fourth-seeded Scranton in a championship semifinal starting at 4 p.m.
