BOALSBURG, Pa. – The Drew University men's golf team had its top three finishers place inside the top-10 - including a runner-up showing from junior
Myles Cherry - and the Rangers came within two strokes of winning a conference title on the second and final day of the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday at Mountain View Country Club.
The Rangers finished with a 615 (314-301), placing behind only the University of Scranton, which shot a 297 on the second day after trailing by two heading into the final round. Drew beat out Catholic (624), Moravian (624), Goucher (645), Elizabethtown (671), Susquehanna (672), and Juniata (685).
Cherry fired a 72 (+2) on Saturday with a very steady performance in which he shot par on 16 of 18 holes. He finished with the top score by any Ranger throughout the tournament and finished with a 9-over 149 (77-72). Cherry placed just two strokes behind medalist Danny Harding of Scranton while capturing First-Team All-Landmark Conference honors by virtue of his top-six performance.
Freshman
Elliot Parker was just one stroke behind Cherry, placing third with a 150 (73-77) while also earning First-Team All-Landmark Conference recognition. Ranked 33rd in Division III by GolfStat entering the tournament, he will now hope for an individual at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Championships; the field will be announced on May 8 on NCAA.com.
Classmate
Bryce Garnier, who birdied the par-4 fifth hole, tied for 10th with a 157 (79-78) as he gained a spot on the All-Landmark Conference Second Team.
Freshman
Shiv Bhaskar rounded out the team scoring, tying for 17th in the field of 40 with a 160 (86-74). Sophomore
Mike Ford was also in action and tied for 23rd with a 164 (85-79).
