Tynan, McCarthy Break or Tie Caused Turnover Records as Rangers Down Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Senior Jack Tynan and junior Tyler McCarthy broke or tied a pair of school records for caused turnovers and the Drew University men's lacrosse team closed the season on a high note with a 19-5 Landmark Conference victory at Juniata College.

The Rangers (6-10, 1-6 LC) fired off 76 shots and scored the first six goals of the game en route to their second-highest (tied) scoring total of the season.

Tynan finished with five caused turnovers for the game and closed out his career with 74, tying the program mark established by Michael Lloyd C'17 from 2014-17. Meanwhile, McCarthy was credited with three CTs, giving him 34 for the season to break the previous single-season Drew standard of 31 set by Lloyd in 2016.

Offensively, sophomore Mike DeMayo racked up a career-high-tying eight points on four goals and four assists while freshman Ian Curley tossed in five goals. Senior Craig Wilkie closed his career with one goal and five assists as he finished with 123 goals – tied for seventh all-time at Drew – to go with 59 assists for 182 points, which ranks eighth in school history.

Junior GJ Nazziola had a spectacular day as well, finishing 25-for-28 on faceoffs while helping the Rangers tie the single-game record of 25 faceoff wins originally set in March 26, 2008 at Moravian. Nazziola also scooped 17 ground balls – the fourth-highest total in Drew history and the most since Craig Middleton broke the school record with 21 versus King's in 2005. Nazziola's 129 GBs for the season rank seventh in team history.

Three different goalies saw action for the Rangers. Freshman Matt Duarte started and played the opening half, stopping four shots and allowing three goals. Classmate Sawyer Kennedy and senior Yoel Ovadya also manned the pipes and posted one goal against and one save each.

Justin Toney collected 32 saves for the Eagles (3-13, 0-7 LC).

DeMayo scored the first two goals of the game while Curley also struck for a pair of first-quarter tallies. Juniata netted the final two tallies of the period and it was a 6-2 game after 15 minutes of play.

The teams combined for just three goals in the second quarter, staring with back-to-back scores by the Eagles that made it 6-3.  Junior Brett Spafford and Curley answered for the Rangers, who took a five-goal lead into the locker room.

Spafford and Curley's goals kicked off a 10-0 Drew run that spanned the second through the fourth quarters. The outburst included seven third-quarter goals, which included two apiece from DeMayo and junior Matt Giordano.

Drew led 15-3 through three quarters before Spafford capped the big run when he struck with 13:12 left in the game. Juniata stopped the bleeding with 11:08 left but the Rangers tacked on their final three goals when junior Alex Higgins, freshman Theo Krueger, and Curley scored in succession to make it 19-4. The Eagles set the final scored with a goal at the 50-second mark.
