Vassar Rallies Late, Tops Men’s Soccer

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Ethan Steinbiss scored in the 57th minute, but Vassar College rallied with two goals in the final 27 minutes to hand the Drew University men's soccer team a 2-1 setback in non-conference action Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.

Steinbiss registered his first career goal with a leaping, acrobatic shot from just inside the 18 on a cross from classmate Gabe Di Pierro.

The Brewers (3-2-1), ranked seventh regionally, tied it in the 64th minute on a goal from Owen Fauth. Then with just five minutes left, Vassar received a free kick in their defensive third and sent a long ball down the left side of the field. Fauth came up with it and crossed it into the center of the box to Jared Fiske, who one-timed it into the right post for what held up as the game-winner.

Freshman Jacob Avni kept it a one-goal game for the Rangers (3-2-2) when he made a spectacular diving save on a direct kick from just outside the 18 in the 87th minute.

The Rangers threatened down the stretch, as junior Kevin Kiernan attempted three shots in the last five minutes. His best attempt was a blast that ricocheted off a defender and just to the left of the goal in the 89th minute.

Defense controlled the opening half, when Vassar held a 3-1 shot advantage. The Brewers nearly struck when a header off a corner hit the crossbar in the 30th minute.

The visitors finished with an 8-7 edge in shots. Kiernan attempted five shots, including two that were on frame.

Avni and Vassar's Vasilis Ganasoulis each recorded two saves.

The Rangers play their Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, when they host Juniata College at 1 p.m.
