MADISON, N.J. - Elizabethtown College scored in the 83rd minute and the Drew University men's soccer team was handed a tough 1-0 setback to Elizabethtown College in a Landmark Conference matchup Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
In a game dictated by stingy defense, the two sides combined to allow just four shots on goal.
The Blue Jays (4-3-2, 2-0 LC) scored on a header from Thomas Smith following a corner kick from Jude Ashley.
Freshman
Jacob Avni and Etown's Kelvin Del Cid each recorded one save.
The Rangers (5-3-2, 1-1 LC) placed a shot on goal midway through the first half, when sophomore
Jared Brown attempted a header on the back post that was hauled in by Del Cid.
Drew kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard in the opening half, thanks in large part to a highlight-reel defensive play from senior
Christian Tyson. After an Etown free kick, a header shot was headed into an open net but Tyson rushed in to make an acrobatic, sliding clear.
Neither side would attempt another shot on goal until Smith's game-winner. Early in the second half, junior
Kevin Kiernan found himself open in space and rocketed a shot that sailed just right.
Etown nearly went in front with 28 minutes left, when a long blast from Pedro Lyra smashed off the crossbar.
The Rangers are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Landmark Conference newcomer Wilkes University at 7 p.m.
