DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore
James Cahill scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute, and the Drew University men's soccer team snapped Western Connecticut University's 23-match unbeaten streak with a 3-2 non-conference victory Wednesday evening.
Senior
Matt Agudelo added a goal and an assist for the Rangers (1-1-1), who earned their first victory of the season. Junior
Kevin Kiernan distributed a pair of assists and has now provided a helper on five of Drew's six goals this season. Sophomore
Jonathan Gutierrez also scored a goal for Drew.
The Wolves held a 20-7 shot advantage, but sophomore
Brandon Jachera recorded seven saves for his first career win.
Kadin Talho posted one goal and one assist for WestConn (1-1), which suffered its first loss since a 2-1 setback to Eastern Connecticut in the Little East Conference championship match on Nov. 6, 2021. The Wolves finished 20-0-2 last season, when the Rangers played them to a 1-1 draw in Madison.
With the match tied 2-2, the Rangers received a corner kick on the left. Junior
Thomas Zurkowski delivered a ball to the right post, where Kiernan bounced a header that deflected off a defender and right to Cahill, who drilled it into the left side of the net for his career game-winner.
WestConn controlled possession for most of the final minutes but the Rangers did not yield a shot the rest of the way.
The Wolves never trailed after scoring in the 18th minute. However, in the 26th minute, the Rangers found themselves in a breakaway and senior
Christian Tyson and a defender collided on the left wing. Kiernan quickly recovered the loose ball and crossed it to Agudelo, who one-timed it home to make it 1-1.
WestConn outshot Drew 11-2 in the opening half, but Jachera made four of his stops in the period.
The hosts went back in front on a penalty kick in the 47th minute; however, Drew had the equalizer once again. On a free kick from the right sideline, Agudelo sent a high-arching pass into the box, where it was knocked down by the goalie. But Gutierrez recovered the ball on the left and smashed it inside the far post for his first career goal.
The hosts outshot the Rangers 9-5 in the second half, but Jachera collected three saves during the stanza.
Drew returns to the pitch on Saturday, when it hosts Saint Joseph's Long Island at 7 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
