MADISON, N.J. – Senior
Tyler Olivio scored with 2:05 remaining and the Drew University field hockey team held off a Goucher rally, winning 3-2 in a Landmark Conference showdown Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (8-7, 2-4 LC) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, only to see the Gophers rally to tie it with 7:16 left. But that's when Olivio stepped up and delivered her team-leading ninth goal of the season, finishing off a centering pass from senior
Janelle Arch for her fifth game-winning goal this year.
Sophomore
Beth Kelly made eight saves for the Rangers.
Goucher finished with advantages in shots (15-11) and corners (11-8),
Olivio, Arch, and
Lauren Cagliostro were recognized in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the game.
The Rangers struck early, when Arch finished off a cross from sophomore
Chandler Straub with 10:31 left in the opening quarter. Then with 40 seconds left in the period, sophomore
Emma Rider drilled in a shot off a deflection from the outside to make it a 2-0 affair.
The Gophers (6-9, 1-5) cut the deficit in half when Kaitlyn Bucci tipped in shot following a corner. She then tied the game before Olivio's late heroics.
The Rangers withstood heavy pressure from Goucher in the second half, when the Gophers outshot Drew 9-3 and held an 8-2 surplus in corners.
The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play on Tuesday, when they visit the University of Scranton at 7 p.m.
