MADISON, N.J. – Four different players scored a goal and the Drew University field hockey team closed the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Wilkes University in Landmark Conference action Tuesday evening in Ranger Stadium.
With their win and Scranton's victory over Lycoming, the Rangers (10-8, 4-5 LC) qualified for the Landmark Conference Championships for the first time since 2013. They earned the No. 6 seed will visit No. 3-seeded Scranton on Saturday in a first-round matchup starting at 1 p.m.
Drew earned its first win over Wilkes since a 2-0 victory in the 2004 MAC Freedom Conference semifinals. The two sides did not meet from 2007-22, when they competed in separate conferences before Wilkes joined the Rangers in the Landmark Conference in 2023.
The Rangers, who have reached a double-figure win total for the first time since 2013, scored a goal in each quarter and built a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
Drew held Wilkes (3-15, 1-8 LC) without a shot over the first three quarters and finished with a 16-3 advantage for the game.
Sophomore
Beth Kelly made a pair of saves for the Rangers while Olivia Wickel stopped six shots for the Colonels.
Freshman
Ellie Kopec put Drew on the scoreboard with three and a half minutes left in the first quarter, backhanding a shot from the left side. Senior
Lauren Cagliostro started the play with a corner pass to the top of the arc, where sophomore
Emma Rider passed it off to Kopec for the goal.
Cagliostro and Kopec reversed roles with just over two minutes left in the opening half. Cagliostro delivered a corner pass to Kopec, who from the left elbow sent a pass back to a wide-open Cagliostro on the left post. Cagliostro pushed a shot through the 5-hole again and the Rangers carried a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Yet another corner led to Drew's third goal. With 6:25 remaining in the third quarter, Cagliostro found Rider up top, and her pass was deflected to the left by a defender. Junior
Emily Monaco swooped in and fired off a quick shot that found its way inside the right post, giving the Rangers a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Wilkes converted on its first shot of the game, when Emma Lautenbacher struck on a pass from Olivia Gayoski less than a minute into the fourth quarter. But the Rangers settled any doubt when senior
Janelle Arch sent home a rebound to cap a three-shot flurry on another Drew corner, setting the final score with just under two minutes to go.
