MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore guard
Amy Rachilla, junior forward
Gianna Pica, and junior guard
Maddie Beyer all set or tied career-highs in scoring and the Drew University women's basketball used a red-hot shooting performance to earn an 88-78 victory over Goucher College in a Landmark Conference tilt Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
Â
Rachilla (27 points) and Pica (26 points) each set career-highs while Beyer (18 points) tied her career-best as the Rangers (3-1, 2-0 LC) posted their highest point total since an 89-32 win over Juniata College on Jan. 28, 2023.
Â
Drew knocked down 12-of-24 shots from beyond the arc, marking the team's most 3-pointers made in a game since hitting 15 in a 74-53 victory over Brooklyn College on Dec. 6, 2022.
Â
Rachilla shot 6-for-9 from downtown, and her six 3s tied her for ninth-most in team history. She also handed out seven assists.
Â
Pica posted a career-high scoring total for the second game in a row after netting 22 points versus Moravian this past Wednesday. She shot 11-for-18 from the field, and she also hauled in seven rebounds.
Â
Beyer connected on 4-of-8 shots from 3-point territory, tying her career-high for 3-pointers made as well.
Â
Junior forward
Brenna Hezel added career-highs of 10 points and six assists for the Rangers while sophomore guard
Miabella Diaz pulled down a career-best nine rebounds.
Â
Meona Boykin led Goucher (4-2, 0-2 LC) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Gophers used the "Grinnell System," an incredibly fast-paced style featuring quick possessions, full-court pressing, and frequent 5-for-5 substitutions.
Â
The Rangers never trailed after scoring the game's first six points. Drew was red-hot from 3-point range in the opening half, shooting 5-for-8 from distance in each of the first two quarters. The Rangers led 28-14 at the end of the first quarter and 48-35 at halftime. Rachilla pumped in 19 of her points in the opening 20 minutes, when she shot 7-for-9 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point land.
Â
Goucher rallied in the third quarter, however, and eventually cut the deficit to five (61-56) with 1:50 showing. It was a 65-60 game heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
The Gophers drew to within five one last time, when it was 72-67 with 6:44 left. But that's when the Rangers used a key 7-0 to open up some breathing room with 5:01 remaining. Beyer kicked off the run with five straight points before Pica converted a lay-up.
Â
Goucher refused to go away, however, and trailed just 82-76 with 3:08 to go. But the Rangers answered once again, this time scoring six straight points to double their lead with just 1:30 showing. Diaz opened the surge with a jumper before Rachilla hit a pair of free throws at the 2:09 mark. Hezel nailed a jumper to cap the spurt, and the two sides combined for just one bucket down the stretch.
Â
The Rangers continue their season on Dec. 1, when they cap a five-game, season-opening homestand when they host Raritan Valley in a non-conference affair starting at 2 p.m.
