NEW YORK – Junior forward
Gianna Pica of the Drew University women's basketball team has captured a spot on the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II/III Weekly Honor Roll.
Pica, who was also selected as the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, recorded 21 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high-tying five steals in Drew's 85-56 victory over FDU-Florham this past Saturday. She scored 11 of her points in the second quarter, when the Rangers outscored the Devils 35-16.
For the season, Pica leads the Rangers in scoring (21.3 ppg), rebounding (7.9 rpg), field-goal percentage (47.0%), and steals (tied, 2.1 spg). Among the Landmark Conference leaders, she ranks first in scoring, third in field-goal percentage, and fourth in rebounding. Pica is also the 21st-leading scorer in Division III.
The MBWA media panel selects one men's and one women's player of the week and an honor roll from nominations received for Division I schools, plus one men's and one women's player of the week and an honor roll from nominations received for Division II and III schools combined. The Division II/III designation encompasses players from 45 Met area schools.
Drew (6-2) returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Salisbury University at 6 p.m. in a non-conference outing.
