Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late Run Sends Women’s Lax to First Win

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team ended the game on a 4-0 run and captured its first victory of the season with an 18-14 win over Vassar College in a sunny and blustery Ranger Stadium Saturday afternoon.

With the game tied 14-14 and 6:00 on the clock, freshman Grace Patane scored the go-ahead tally with perhaps the play of the game. With Vassar looking to clear, the keeper had roamed away from the goal and lost control of the ball, and Patane scooped it up and fired into an open net before the goalie was able to retreat. It held up as the game-winning goal, and sophomore Aubrey Welch, senior Lizzy Barrett, and senior Emma DiPatri added one tally apiece as the Rangers (1-2) won going away.

Barrett finished with four goals and one assist for Drew, which outshot the Brewers 43-35. Senior Ella Champigny also scored four goals while DiPatri notched three goals and one assist. Patane added three goals while senior Mary Kate Davidson contributed two goals and three caused turnovers. Welch also scored twice, and freshman Paige Shaw collected 13 saves.

Tess Billings, Maeve Faigel, and Kali Ringler scored three goals apiece for Vassar, which held a 22-13 advantage in draw controls.

The Brewers jumped to a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Rangers climbed back into it with a 5-0 run to open the second quarter. Barrett scored twice during the spurt while Davidson, Champigny, and Welch tallied once apiece. Drew ended up outscoring Vassar 6-3 in the period to make it a 9-9 game at halftime.

Champigny scored the first two goals of the third quarter before the Brewers answered with a pair to make it 11-11 with 3:31 left in the stanza. Davidson and DiPatri went back-to-back to put the Rangers ahead 13-11, but Vassar scored the final goal of the period and Drew carried a 13-12 lead into the final quarter.

Barrett opened the scoring in final frame before Vassar struck twice to pull even at 14-all with 9:42 left, setting up Drew's late flurry.

The Rangers continue their season next Saturday, when they visit Muhlenberg College at noon in another non-conference tilt.
