Men’s Volleyball Defeats Mount Saint Vincent

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's volleyball team earned a four-set victory over the University of Mount Saint Vincent Monday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers won by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18.

A big team effort carried Drew, which had 16 players enter the game.

The Rangers and Dolphins were facing off for the first time ever in men's volleyball.

Sophomore Andrew DuHaime posted six kills and six digs for Drew while sophomore Barend Oostdam threw down a career-high five blocks. Junior Huriel Perez handed out 13 assists, and freshman Casey Connolly served up three aces. Freshman Jesus Cuautle Perez scooped 10 digs while junior Jason Barbosa and freshman Yeicob Martinez added three bocks each.

Olatomiwa Ibitayo led the Dolphins (1-4) with 11 kills.

The Rangers were hot from the start in the opening set, racing out to an 8-1 lead. Drew continued to pull away throughout the set and led 18-5 before seeing their advantage balloon to 15. The squad posted its top hitting percentage of the night in the opening set, when it notched a .241 mark.

A number of reserves entered the match in the second set for the Rangers, who again opened quickly, leading 7-3 early in the set. However, there would be five ties and three lead changes, and the Dolphins led as late as 14-13. But that's when the Rangers got hot, outscoring UMSV 12-4 the rest of the way.

The visitors rallied late in third set, ending the stanza on an 8-2 run. However, the Rangers settled any doubt in the fourth set, opening on a 6-3 spurt before eventually taking a 17-12 lead. The Dolphins scored the next points before Drew closed the match on an 8-1 surge.

The Rangers return home on Wednesday, when takes on Wilkes University at 7 p.m.
