LANGHORNE, Pa. – Junior
Ephraim Smith threw down a season-high 16 kills and the Drew University men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep at Cairn University Friday evening.
Drew, which earned its second victory of the season versus Cairn, won by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-20.
With the victory, the Rangers (9-10) tied the program record for victories in a season, equaling the mark set in each of the team's first two seasons over the past two years.
Smith committed just three errors on 32 attempts for a .406 hitting percentage.
Junior
Jacob Sledz added six kills, 13 digs, and five aces for the Rangers while senior
Omarf Ortega-Reyes dished out 29 assists. Sophomore
Jason Barbosa contributed seven blocks.
Joe Poirier led Cairn (1-12) with 11 kills.
The Rangers rallied in the opening set after falling behind 7-3 early. Drew still trailed at 17-16 before erupting with a 6-0 run to pull away.
In the second set, the Rangers never trailed after jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Highlanders came back to pull to within one, 23-22, before the Rangers scored two of the last three points on a pair of kills from Sledz.
The final set was close throughout, and Drew led just 21-19 before outscoring Cairn 4-1 the rest of the way on two kills from sophomore
Andrew DuHaime and one apiece from Sledz and Smith.
The Rangers are now off from competition for 14 days before picking up their schedule on March 16, when they take on Eastern and Neumann in a tri-match starting at 11 a.m.
