Rhodes Tops Rangers on Opening Day of Leanos Cup

MADISON, N.J. – The inaugural Leanos Cup men's lacrosse tournament kicked off on Friday with a pair of first-round matchups in Ranger Stadium.

No. 17 Stevens Institute topped Haverford College 18-12 in the opening game before Rhodes College defeated the Rangers 19-5.

Rhodes and Stevens will now meet in the championship game on Sunday at 11 a.m. before Drew and Haverford face off in the consolation game at 3 p.m.

The tournament is named after former Drew Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Tom Leanos, the team's all-time winningest coach who compiled 234 victories in a career that spanned four decades from 1988-2017.

Versus Rhodes, junior Mike DeMayo and sophomore Riley Zeer led the Rangers (5-2) with one goal and one assist apiece while senior GJ Nazziola won 15 of 24 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls. Sophomore Sawyer Kennedy made a career-high 15 saves for Drew, which saw its five-game winning streak come to an end.

Drew Downes recorded seven goals and two assists for the Lynx (6-3).

Zeer scored the first goal of the game 1:18 into the contest before Rhodes scored five unanswered to end the opening quarter. Each side scored three goals in the second quarter and the Lynx led 8-4 at the half. Junior Charlie Collins, senior Brett Spafford, and DeMayo scored one goal apiece in the period.

Rhodes pulled away in the second half, scoring 11 goals over the final two stanzas.

The two sides were meeting for the first time since March 6, 2016 in Memphis.
