Rangers Rally Late, But Fall to Susquehanna in Landmark Conference Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team scored eight goals in the fourth quarter, slicing an eight-goal deficit in half, but Susquehanna University handed the Rangers a 21-17 setback in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Monday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The game was originally scheduled for this past Saturday, but was postponed due to field conditions caused by heavy rain.

Senior Lizzy Barrett posted four goals and one assist for the Rangers, who netted at least 14 goals for the seventh straight game. Senior Mary Kate Davidson and sophomore Emma Gallaro added two goals apiece while seniors Ella Champigny and Emma DiPatri contributed two goals each.

Champigny added eight ground balls and five draw controls for the Rangers (4-5, 0-1 LC) while Gallaro notched six draw controls.

Abby Andrus scored a Landmark Conference record-tying 11 goals for the River Hawks (7-2, 1-0 LC) while Heather Riefenhauser posted two goals and eight assists. Aerin O'Brien made 16 saves for the visitors.

The Rangers led 2-1 in the early going following goals from Gallaro and Barrett. Davidson tied it at 3-3 and 4-4 before Susquehanna scored the final goal of the quarter to assume a 5-4 lead heading into the second period.

The River Hawks outscored the Rangers 5-2 in the second quarter to open a 10-6 halftime lead. DiPatri and freshman Grace Patane scored back-to-back goals to make it 8-6 before SU scored twice in the final 3:25 of the stanza.

Barrett struck twice in the opening 5:11 of the second half to pull her team to within 11-8. But that's when Susquehanna scored five unanswered tallies and outscored the Rangers 6-1 over the remainder of the quarter to assume a 17-9 lead heading into the final quarter.

Welch kickstarted the Rangers' big fourth quarter when she scored just over two minutes into the period. DiPatri, senior Rachael West, Barrett, and Champigny all joined in the scoring spree to cut the lead to 18-14 with 8:45 still left.

The two sides traded goals three times down the stretch, with Gallaro scoring twice and Davison closing out the score with final goal of the day.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Thursday, when they host Catholic University at 4 p.m.
