Women’s Lacrosse Drops Close Decision to Catholic

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team gave Catholic University all it could handle, but the Cardinals used a late 3-0 run to pull away for a 15-10 victory in a Landmark Conference tilt Thursday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers trailed just 11-9 heading into the fourth quarter before Catholic's decisive surge.

Senior Mary Kate Davidson led Drew with three goals, one assist, and a career-high seven caused turnovers – a mark that ties her for third in school history. Seniors Ella Champigny and Emma DiPatri added two goals and one assist apiece, and Champigny and sophomore Emily Monaco each collected five ground balls. Senior Lizzy Barrett contributed one goal and two assists.

Between the pipes, freshman Paige Shaw tied a season-high 16 saves for the Rangers.

Izzy Fiore and Maggie Traynor scored three goals apiece for Catholic (4-5, 2-0 LC).

Barrett scored the game's first goal three and a half minutes into the contest. The Cardinals answered with the next three goals to assume a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The visitors would not trail the rest of the way, though the Rangers kept within four goals until the final period.

The second quarter was the highest-scoring stanza, with Catholic just edging the Rangers 5-4. Sophomore Aubrey Welch made it a 3-2 game less than two minutes into the quarter before the Cardinals scored three of the next four goal to assume an 8-4 lead with 1:23 on the clock. But Davidson struck with 1:05 showing and the Rangers made it a three-goal game heading into the intermission.

Drew outscored Catholic 4-3 in the third quarter, starting with back-to-back tallies from DiPatri and Champigny, capping a 3-0 run that made it a one-goal game (8-7) with 13:10 left in the period.

The Cardinals answered with a 3-0 run to push the lead back to four, but the Rangers would not go away, as Davidson and sophomore Emma Gallaro scored consecutive man-up goals to make it 11-9 at the end of the third quarter.

After Catholic's big 3-0 run, Davidson scored with 3:17 remaining to make it a 14-10 game, but the Cardinals did not allow a shot the rest of the way.

The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Wilkes University at 5 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
