WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team held Catholic University to three goals in the first half, but the Cardinals used a big second half to hand the Rangers a 13-5 setback in Landmark Conference action on Saturday.
Freshman
Joe Barnish made 11 of his 14 saves in the first half for Drew, which carried a 5-3 lead into the intermission before Catholic scored 10 unanswered goals the rest of the way.
Senior
Brett Spafford scored a pair of goals for the Rangers while classmate
Tyler McCarthy posted five ground balls and two caused turnovers, the second of which tied the school record of 79 held by Michael Lloyd C'17 and
Jack Tynan C'23.
Victor Rosado netted three goals and four assists for the Cardinals (6-4, 2-0 LC) while Mike Tayloe recorded seven caused turnovers and six ground balls.
The Rangers scored the first two goals of the game, as senior
Kellum Foster-Palmer struck two minutes in before Spafford followed up with a man-up tally off an assist from junior
Charlie Collins at the 10:05 mark.
Thanks in part to Barnish's seven saves, Drew blanked Catholic until the Cardinals scored with 39 seconds showing to make it 2-1 heading into the second quarter.
Collins scored just over a minute into the second quarter, but Catholic answered 14 seconds later to make it 3-2. However, Spafford netted his second goal two minutes later, converting a feed from junior
Mike DeMayo to make it 4-2 with 11:42 showing in the first half.
Catholic scored with 8:19 to go in the half but sophomore
Colin Diodato followed up for the Rangers, finishing off a dish from junior
Joey Larmore with 2:22 on the clock to give Drew its 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
Catholic went on to score four goals in the third quarter to assume a 7-5 lead before tacking on six more tallies in the final period. Tyler Merchant made nine of his 15 saves in the second half for the Cardinals.
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they host Wilkes University in another Landmark Conference matchup starting at 7 p.m.
