Baseball Holds Off Lycoming in Series Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team jumped to a 5-1 lead through the first five innings and the Rangers held on a for a 6-5 victory over Lycoming College in a Landmark Conference series opener on Saturday at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.

Junior Raiden Yost started on the mound for the Rangers (15-11, 7-7 LC) and worked six innings to earn the win while freshman Tyler Bell tossed the last two innings to pick up the save. Freshman Jack Mocik went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Drew offensively.

The Warriors (5-21, 2-13 LC) struck with a run in the top of the first before the Rangers put up five runs from the second through the fifth innings. Mocik doubled home a run in the second and Drew went ahead to stay when it scored on an error in the third. Senior Anthony Hernandez ripped an RBI-single in the fourth before Mocik struck again with a two-run single in the fifth.

Lycoming scored the next three runs to make it a 5-4 game heading into the seventh-inning stretch, but that's when the Rangers plated a big insurance run on a Yost RBI-single.

Yost (4-1) earned his team-leading fourth win of the season and struck out six while scattering six hits, allowing just two runs. After junior Kenny Yonker pitched the seventh, Bell came on to record the final six outs, yielding one run on three hits while striking out one.

The Warriors put the tying run on base in the ninth with a leadoff single but Bell promptly induced a 5-4-3 double play before getting another groundout to end it. Senior shortstop Anthony Diaz Jr. fielded a well-struck ball up the middle before classmate Nate Miller made a nice scoop at first.

The two sides complete their season series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
