Rangers Rally in Game Two to Sweep Lycoming

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team put up a late rally in the nightcap and the Rangers swept a doubleheader from Lycoming College on Sunday to complete a three-game Landmark Conference series sweep.

The Rangers won the opener 8-7 before capturing the second game 5-4.

Drew (17-11, 9-7 LC) trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth of the nightcap. But that's when junior Raiden Yost and senior Nate Miller singled before freshman Aiden Mitchell ripped a double down the leftfield line to score Yost, making it 4-3. Two batters later, junior Ryan Jones ripped a go-ahead, two-run single through the left side.

Sophomore Brandon Kobryn came on to pitch in the ninth and after allowing a leadoff single, retired three in a row to earn his second save of the year. Classmate Chris Tobia (1-0) fired two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

In the opener, junior Matt Colucci (3-1) pitched six innings to earn the win while Miller homered and drove in four runs for the Rangers, who surpassed their victory total from last season with the victory.

With their sweep, the Rangers stretched their home winning streak to 10.

In the first game, the Rangers jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third inning, which was capped by a majestic three-run homer from Miller.

The Rangers carried their four-run lead into the fifth, when a run was scored in every half inning the rest of the way. The Warriors (5-22, 2-14 LC) narrowed the deficit to 7-6 after scoring twice in the eighth, but Drew pushed across a big insurance run in the bottom half on doubles from freshman Jack Mocik and senior Billy Coleman.

Freshman Graham Ross came on to pitch the ninth and Lycoming promptly loaded the bases before Ross induced a big 4-6-3 double play before getting a flyout to end it while earning his first collegiate save.

Yost, Coleman, and junior Dallas Lorenzetti collected two hits apiece in the opener while Colucci (3-1) scattered seven hits and four runs while striking out a season-high six and walking none.

The Rangers took an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap on a sacrifice fly from Miller in the first and an RBI-single from Lorenzetti in the second. However, the Warriors came back to tie it with single runs in the third and fourth versus freshman starter Aidan Bauer.

Lycoming went in front with a two-run homer in the seventh, making it 4-2. But sophomore reliever Chris Tobia came on to help keep it a two-run game when he worked out of a jam in the seventh. He started two plays in a row defensively, first getting the lead out at third on a bunt, then rolling up a 1-4-3 inning-ending double play. Tobia went on to fire a perfect eighth inning, setting up the Rangers late comeback. He did not allow a run or a hit while recording his first career victory.

Coleman, Jones, and senior Anthony Diaz Jr. all picked up two hits in the second for the Rangers.

Drew returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Moravian University at 3:30 p.m. to close out its three-game season series versus the Greyhounds.
