BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team scored six runs over the fifth and sixth innings to open up a five-run lead and the Rangers held on for 7-5 Landmark Conference victory over Moravian University on Tuesday.
Â
With the win, the Rangers (18-11, 10-7 LC) won its season series versus Moravian for the first time since 2016. After the Greyhounds won the series opener on March 19 in Bethlehem, Drew evened the series with a 7-6 win last Tuesday in Madison.
Â
Sophomore
Kyle Johnson finished 3-for-5 with a go-ahead two-run double in the fifth inning for the Rangers while senior
Anthony Diaz Jr. also collected three hits. Senior
Billy Coleman added a two-run homer and three RBIs for Drew while classmate
Nate Miller singled twice.
Â
Three pitchers combined on the five-hitter for the Rangers. After sophomore starter
Brandon Kobryn limited Moravian to two runs on two hits while striking out four over the opening 3 2/3 innings, freshman
Tyler Bell (1-1) tossed the following 3 2/3 innings to earn the win. Junior
Connor Ruscansky came on to record the final five outs to register his second career save.
Â
Coleman provided the Rangers with an early 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first before Moravian (13-17, 7-10 LC) came back to take the lead with single runs in the third and fourth.
Â
Drew went in front to stay with a three-run fifth. Freshman
Aiden Mitchell was hit by a pitch leading off before Coleman followed up with a single. Three batters later, Johnson delivered his big hit with a shot to right-center that made it 3-2. He went on to score on a single from Diaz.
Â
Miller singled leading off the sixth before Coleman drilled a one-out, two-run homer to right, making it a 6-2 game. Later in the inning, freshman
Jack Mocik single-handedly manufactured a run when he walked, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Â
The Greyhounds put up three runs in the eighth to make it 7-5, but Ruscansky worked a three-up, three-down ninth to close it out.
Â
The Rangers return to action on Thursday, when they host the University of Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference matchup starting at 3:30 p.m.
