BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman
Joe Barnish made a save as time expired and the Drew University men's lacrosse team held off a late Moravian University rally, posting a thrilling 10-9 Landmark Conference victory at Moravian University Wednesday evening.
The Rangers (8-7, 3-4 LC) jumped to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by as many as four goals in the first half. However, the Greyhounds rallied with a late 3-1 run to make it a one-goal game with 1:57 left. Moravian fired off two potential game-tying shots, but the first sailed wide before Barnish batted down one final attempt from in close.
Barnish finished the night with 14 saves for the Rangers, who pulled into a tie for fifth place in the Landmark Conference standings. Senior
Brett Spafford scored a career-high-tying four goals while classmate
Tommy Larmore added two goals and one assist. Junior
Mike DeMayo handed out three assists, and senior
Matt Giordano picked up five ground balls.
Liam Kelly recorded 13 saves for Moravian (8-7, 4-3 LC).
Drew piled up a 13-5 shot advantage in its big opening quarter. Moravian scored the game's first goal, but the Rangers responded with four unanswered tallies, including three inside the final eight minutes. Collins scored twice in the period while senior
Kellum Foster-Palmer and Larmore each struck once.
The Rangers opened the second quarter on a 2-1 spurt, as goals from Spafford and sophomore
Colin Diodato stretched Drew's lead to 6-2. But Moravian posted a man-up goal with 23 seconds left to cut the gap to three at halftime.
The Greyhounds continued to rally in the third quarter, outscoring Drew 3-1 to make it a 7-6 game heading into the final stanza. Spafford scored the first two goals of the period to hand the Rangers a 9-6 lead before Moravian responded 10:07 mark to pull to within two.

GJ Nazziola won a faceoff for the Rangers. However, Drew went on to turn the ball over, setting up the thrilling finish.
The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Goucher College at 1 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
