Mehalick Reaches 100 Wins as Softball Sweeps on Strikeout Cancer Day

MADISON, N.J. – Head Coach Erica Mehalick earned her 100th career victory at Drew and the Ranger softball team swept Rutgers-Newark during the team's NFCA Strikeout Cancer event on Friday at the Drew Softball Complex.

The Rangers (16-12) won the opener 8-0 in five innings before capturing the nightcap 11-3 in six frames.

Mehalick, now in her seventh season at the Forest, reached her milestone with the team's second win of the day, becoming just the second coach in program history to reach the century mark.

Prior to the start of the game, the Rangers joined Rutgers-Newark on the field for a special ceremony to recognize Drew's Strikeout Cancer fundraiser, which raised money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Drew pounded out 31 hits and scored a run in 10 of the 11 innings that were played for the day.

In the opener, junior Tyler Saunders fired a two-hit shutout before freshman Kaitlynne Streets tossed four innings to pick up the win in the nightcap. Senior Molly O'Brien turned in a big day at the plate, finishing 6-for-8 for the afternoon.

Saunders (2-1) was nearly perfect, retiring 15 of the 17 batters she faced, including the first nine.  She yielded only a pair of singles and did not walk a batter while striking out four en route to her second shutout of the season.

The Rangers backed Saunders with plenty of offense, scoring at least one run in every inning. Drew jumped to an early 3-0 lead with a four-hit first, then scored two in the second and one in each of the last three innings.  The game ended in the fifth when O'Brien singled, stole second, and scored on a single up the middle by sophomore Haley Meierhofer.

O'Brien went 3-for-4 with three runs, three stolen bases, and a double in the opener while Meierhofer went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Junior Deja Robinson and sophomore Ashlyn Cassetty added two hits apiece for the Rangers.

Drew erupted for a season-high 17 hits in the second game, when junior Teagan Bradley put the Rangers up early with a two-run single io the first. The hosts broke it open with a four-run fourth before tacking on single runs in the fifth and sixth, with sophomore Josie Di Troia ended the game with a single.

Streets (3-0) allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out two. Sophomore Amanda Novak and freshman Allie Porbansky threw one scoreless inning each.

O'Brien also went 3-for-4 with a double in the nightcap while Bradley and freshman Daylin Evans-Lascik also finished 3-for-4 each. Junior Delaney O'Donoghue, senior Madi Baldwin, and junior Sarah Dunn cracked two hits each.

The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. in Landmark Conference action.
