MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team earned its first Landmark Conference victory of the season, winning the second game of a doubleheader with Catholic University on Saturday at the Drew Softball Complex.
Â
After the Cardinals won the opener 6-2, the Rangers (10-8, 1-3 LC) bounced back to 7-6 in a back-and-forth nightcap, handing Catholic (15-7, 3-1 LC) its first conference loss of the season.
Â
Junior
Fran O'Kleasky finished 4-for-6 at the plate and had a big game in the nightcap, going 3-for-3 while reaching base in all four plate appearances.
Â
Junior
Deja Robinson doubled and scored to put the Rangers on the board in the third inning of the opener, and junior pitcher
Teagan Bradley carried a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning. But that's when Katie Scolese hit a three-run homer to put Catholic ahead to stay.
Â
Senior
Molly O'Brien tripled and scored in the sixth to make it a 3-2 game, but the Cardinals scored three in the top of the seventh to set the final score.
Â
Bradley went the distance in the circle for Drew and tied a season-high with six strikeouts. Aubrynn Arcement tossed a three-hit complete game in the opener for Catholic.
Â
The second game saw the bats come to life for both sides, as the two teams combined for 26 hits in Game Two. Drew tied a season-high with 12 hits.
Â
The Cardinals struck first with a run in the third before the Rangers responded with a 5-spot in the bottom half. Sophomore
Haley Meierhofer drilled an RBI-double to tie it up before O'Kleasy smacked an RBI-single to give the Rangers a 2-1. Robinson then singled home a run before senior
Madi Baldwin capped the big inning with a two-run single.
Â
Catholic answered with a four-run, six-hit fifth to make it a 5-5 game. But the Rangers quickly answered once again, scoring twice in the bottom half to go in front to stay. Robinson singled leading the off before sophomore
Aurora Marino, sophomore
Zoey Shimp, and O'Brien all walked to bring in another run. Meierhofer then drove in her second run of the day with a single that made it 7-5.
Â
The Cardinals scored the game's final run in the sixth.
Â
Freshman
Allie Porbansky started in the circle for Drew and pitched four innings before giving way to classmate
Kaitlynne Streets (2-0), who worked the last three innings to pick up the win. Streets allowed just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two.
Â
In addition's to O'Kleasky, three other Rangers recorded multiple hits, including Robinson, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Baldwin finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Meierhofer went 2-for-4 with two ribbis.
Â
The Rangers wrap up a four-game weekend on Sunday, when they host Moravian University in a Landmark Conference makeup doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
