MADISON, N.J. – The top-seeded Drew University women's tennis team defeated No. 4-seeded Goucher College 5-2 in the Landmark Conference semifinals Thursday afternoon in sunny and hot Drew Tennis Complex.
The Rangers (11-6) will now take on No. 2-seeded Moravian University, a 5-1 winner over No. 3 Scranton in the other semifinal, on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the conference final, where they will seek their third consecutive Landmark Conference title. Moravian and Drew will be meeting in the conference final for the third year in a row.
The Rangers opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches. Senior
Melina Christodoulou and junior
Mary Kalorin won 8-3 at No. 1 before the Gophers (11-8) tied it with an 8-3 victory at No. 2. Junior
Courtney Bresler and sophomore
Natalia Zamora captured an 8-5 decision at No. 3 to put their team up 2-1 heading into singles play.
Freshman
Maddie Krzanowski quickly gave Drew a two-point advantage with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles before Kalorin made it 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Goucher held off the Rangers momentarily with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 but the hosts closed it out when freshman
Riley Roesel rallied from an early deficit to win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6. Per Landmark Conference postseason rules, the match was played to decision.
Drew has now won 28 straight matches versus Landmark Conference opponents, including postseason contests. The Rangers defeated Moravian 6-3 when the two sides met in Bethlehem on April 9 of this year and topped the Greyhounds 5-1 in last year's Landmark final in the Simon Forum.
